Dear Graduate Students,

I am writing with a brief reminder about appropriate points of contact when
situations arise in or around the department.

If an incident occurs within the department, including health or safety
concerns, facilities issues, or other urgent situations, your *first point
of contact should be department staff*, not faculty. In particular, you
should first go to Lori in Room 2128. If Lori is unavailable, please
proceed to the staff office suite in Room 2122 to find another staff member
(these offices are located in the same hallway as the upstairs bathrooms).
Our staff are trained to handle these situations and to coordinate next
steps, including contacting emergency services when needed.

Faculty members should not be asked to manage emergency response or
operational matters unless there is a clear reason staff are unavailable,
or unless you have been explicitly instructed otherwise.

This guidance is meant to ensure situations are handled quickly and
appropriately.

Thank you for your attention to this.
