Subject: TA positions available AY 25-26

Dear Colleagues:

I hope you had a restful spring break.

As the last quarter of this AY begins, I wanted to let you know of TA opportunities for two University Honors courses for AY 2025-2026. See course descriptions below; if you know of graduate students who might be interested in serving as TAs for either, or both, of these classes please have them contact me directly: Honorsdirector at ucr.edu<mailto:Honorsdirector at ucr.edu>. Applications received by April 15, 2025, will be given full consideration.

Thank you,
Begoña

HNPG 2W: Principles of Civic Engagement:
Start where thou ART
Fall 2025
MW 5:00-6:20pm

Course description: 4 Units, Lecture, 3 hours; workshop, 1 hour. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 001B with a grade of C or better; admission to the University Honors Program. Aims to cultivate, enhance, and facilitate interest in social change. Bridges the academic and personal life by providing knowledge and tools for civic engagement. Fulfills the third-quarter writing requirement for students who earn a grade of "C" or better for courses that the Academic Senate designates, and that the student’s college permits, as alternatives to English 001C. Satisfactory(S) or No Credit(N/C) is not available.

This course is designed to involve you as a civically engaged citizen consistent with the second pillar of University Honors: Cultivating a Culture of Contribution. Through presentations, readings, and workshops you will be challenged to become civically aware with a specific focus on the Inland Empire, especially the city and county of Riverside, and UCR. Throughout this course you will be asked to reflect on what you believe and how you can effect meaningful change. As a “W” course, HNPG 2W will have regular written assignments based on various aspects of the course related to civic engagement. Throughout the course you will be introduced to a number of projects from individuals who want you to be involved. The goal is to have you become involved in projects that are meaningful to you and that may well continue beyond this quarter. Additional opportunities for Honors students exist in HNPG2B and HNPG 2C.

HNPG 150: Research and Creative Activity Across the Disciplines
Winter 2026

Course description: 3 Units, Lecture 1, Discussion 1, Workshop 1. Prerequisite(s): admission to, and good standing in, University Honors; or consent of instructor; upper-division standing.

This course extends and strengthens your understanding of how scholars approach research / creative activity / experiential learning across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. To facilitate what students will need to do for their own capstone project, the course will demonstrate how scholars select a significant issue, review what is already known about it, and pose a research question whose answer promises to advance knowledge.

Through Honors Faculty Fellow lectures, discussion sections and library workshops, you will receive support and tools around the capstone process that will result in a better understanding of how to develop the skills associated with completing a large project, the submission of an approved capstone proposal form, making an oral presentation of your work, and a detailed prospectus outlining your plan for researching and completing your capstone.
