[Pomona College]
Associate Dean of the College for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Dear Colleague,
My name is April Mayes and I am one of seven associate deans who serve the Claremont Colleges in faculty development, professional flourishing, mentoring, and inclusive excellence. On behalf of those deans, I would like to bring your attention to a one-day convening we are planning for advanced graduate students (ABD), newly minted PhDs, and postdoctoral fellows as part of an emerging scholars/future faculty program. The Emerging Scholars Symposium will occur on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 9:30am-4:00pm on the campus of Pomona College in Claremont.
Pomona College is the founding member of the Claremont Colleges which include the undergraduate institutions, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Pitzer, and two graduate universities, Claremont Graduate University and KGI. The consortium is contiguous; students can take classes at any of the colleges, but each one is independent. Located in eastern Los Angeles County, the city of Claremont is accessible from the city of Los Angeles and Orange and San Bernardino Counties via Metrolink.
>From its beginnings in the city of Pomona, Pomona College has always been co-educational and in the early twentieth century graduated its first Asian-, Mexican-, and African-American students. Scripps College remains committed to women's education, while Claremont Mckenna, originally Claremont Men's College, and Pitzer College became co-ed several years after their founding. Today, nearly 6300 undergraduates matriculate at the Claremont Colleges, a "highly distinctive model of collaboration in higher education," where each entering class is more diverse and reflective of the American promise than ever before.
On Saturday, June 7th, we will host the one-day Emerging Scholars Symposium with the goal of introducing small liberal arts colleges to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in southern California. Our goal is to help prepare them for the next steps in their professional journeys, which may include applying to and accepting positions at small liberal arts colleges. We will organize panels, workshops, and discussions to help prepare emerging scholars for their next steps. These events will feature faculty members from departments who will be conducting searches in the near future. This event is a great opportunity to connect and network.
Please forward this email to those advanced graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in your department who will soon be on the job market or who might be interested in pursuing careers at small liberal arts colleges. Please visit our webpage, Emerging Scholars/Future Faculty Convening<https://www.pomona.edu/administration/diversity-pomona/emerging-scholarsfuture-faculty-convening>, for more information and to register. We will update all information on that site.
Thank you for your help and thank you for considering joining us.
