Subject: [GSAUCR] Our Response Trump Administration's cuts to UCLA
To: <GSAUCR at lists.ucr.edu>

Dear UC Riverside Graduate Student Community,

In recent months, the Trump administration has taken unprecedented steps
against UCLA. The university is currently facing the suspension of $586
million in funding. In response to the funding freeze, U.S. District Court
Judge Rita Lin ruled that the action violated the standing injunction and
ordered that more than a third be restored. Regardless of the restoration
of some of the funding, this will jeopardize critical research projects
that train our students and support essential research for healthcare,
national security, scientific innovation, the economy, and more.

The federal government has proposed that UCLA pay a $1 billion fine and
contribute $172 million to a fund intended to compensate individuals
allegedly affected by civil rights violations. Beyond these financial
demands, the proposal calls for sweeping changes across the UC system,
including restrictions on campus peaceful protests, changes to admissions
fair practices, limitations on gender identity accommodations in housing
and athletics, elimination of scholarships based on race or ethnicity, and
the appointment of an external monitor to enforce compliance.

In solidarity with the UCLA Faculty Association, we urge the UC to stand
firm against the Trump administration’s illegitimate and bad-faith demands.
The UC must reject these malicious efforts to weaken higher education in
the United States and immediately challenge them vigorously in court. We
further call on the UC Office of the President to work in close partnership
with Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature to address any
resulting financial shortfall, and to explore utilizing a portion of the
University’s over $5 billion in unrestricted endowment funds to preserve
the integrity of its mission.

On August 9th, UC Student leaders urgently called on the UC administration
to reject the Trump administration’s proposed settlement. In this letter
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sMwwuaWLXM-2atDx-EyQn8E5Tun510EtViz_cJxUI38/edit?usp=sharing>
sent to President Milliken by the UC Graduate and Professional Council, we
asked for the UC to refuse any settlement, to collaborate with Governor
Newsom and the UCLA Faculty Association, and to vigorously challenge the
federal government’s actions in court. It has been over a week and there
has been no response from the Office of the President. Our voices are
stronger together and we must make it clear to President Milliken that we
DO NOT want to negotiate with the Trump administration! With over 280,000
students, 227,000 faculty and staff, and more than 2 million alumni
worldwide, the UC has the collective strength, power, and unity to stand
firm against unconstitutional federal overreach. This is our opportunity to
stand together and stand strong against federal overreach and to resist
ideological authoritarianism.

Join the movement by adding your voice to the call (via google form

posting on social media about the action and what the University of
California means to you with the hashtag #StandUpForUC.

In addition to your support in our call to action, if you or anyone you
know has benefited from the NSF, NIH, and Department of Energy funded from
UCLA we encourage you to fill out this google form

TLDR : The time for action is now! Sign in support of the UC community
