Dear Graduate Students,

As part of Dr. Merolla’s retention package, she received funding for a
module on the Cooperative Election Study (CES, formerly CCES). She plans to
use about a third of the 15 minutes of survey time and is making 8-10
minutes of survey time available for graduate students and faculty.

Background on the CES is here: https://cces.gov.harvard.edu/

*PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR QUESTIONS ARE PART OF THE TEAM CONTENT, MEANING THE
SURVEY SAMPLE SIZE WILL BE 1,000 SUBJECTS.*

If you are interested in including questions on this CES module, please
write a short proposal (1-2 pages) that identifies your specific research
question and how the items included will provide leverage for addressing
your research question with respect to the literature to which your work
speaks. Proposals should explain how including these questions will help
facilitate your research agenda (whether dissertation or a specific
paper). Please also note whether the questions you are asking have been
asked on other surveys and explain why they should be included on this one.

In addition, you must submit the precise questions including response
categories you would like to have included. Make sure to include any
randomization rules, branching rules (e.g., ask version 1 if race=white),
etc. Finally, the proposed questions *MUST* be properly formatted for CES
submission, and your proposal *MUST* include an estimate of the time it
requires and state the relative importance of on which part of the module
it appears (must appear on pre- or post-election survey, prefer it appears
on pre/post, no preference). Please see the attached document for
guidelines on question formatting and timing.

I have also attached the Common Content for both the pre- and post-election
surveys. The Common Content contains the questions that will be asked of
respondents outside of our Team Content. Please look it over and ensure any
questions you wish to ask are not already going to be asked. In addition,
you may wish to branch off these questions.

Please also note that anything placed on the CES requires IRB approval.
Obtaining approval is not an issue (I will take care of it), but it does
require that every participant complete the relevant online training. If
you have not yet done so (or if your training is out of date), please
either do so or plan to do so immediately following notification that your
proposal has been accepted.

Proposals should be submitted (via email as a single document) to Dan
Biggers by *5:00 pm on August 5th. *I apologize for the short timeline, but
we only just found out that we would be able to get a module. *Late
proposals will only be considered if there is available time after the
review of all on-time submissions.*

Proposals will be evaluated (by a committee) based on the extent to which
you demonstrate the link to your research project, the extent to which the
project makes a clear contribution (to the literature on your question),
whether the items they tap are otherwise available from other resources,
the clarity of the questions, their appropriateness for the CES given its
unique structure, and the amount of time they take to administer. Priority
will be given to those students who have or plan to have defended their
prospectus by the end of the summer, but all proposals will be considered.

*In order to ensure that as many people as possible can take advantage of
this opportunity, NO individual will be granted more than two minutes of
time. Please take this into account when crafting your proposal. Depending
on demand and the quality of proposals, we may need to limit individuals to
one minute of time. As such, if your proposal is longer than 1 minute,
please indicate how, if necessary, it could be trimmed to a single minute
of time.*

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Best,

Dan
