Dear EGAP,

I'm the head of a search committee at UNC for a Teaching Assistant
Professor in our "Data in Politics" sequence. It's a great fit for someone
who wants a stable, long-term teaching job at an institution (and
department) that values its teaching faculty. More info below. Please
circulate to anyone who might be interested!
Best,

Lucy Martin, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Political Science
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

*More info:*
We are seeking to hire—on a quick timeline—a Teaching Assistant Professor
(TAP) to help teach our “Data in Politics” sequence—a two semester
experience wherein UNC undergraduates receive a rigorous introduction to
quantitative methods in the social sciences via the R programming language.

The Data in Politics sequence is really exciting. Over the past several
years, Tim Ryan and I have invested a lot of effort developing approaches
to teach undergraduates quantitative methods via active learning techniques
(e.g. peer mentoring and flipped classroom approaches where students
collaborate to solve a challenge-of-the-day, custom R tutorials, etc). This
instructional approach, along with Data in Politics becoming integrated
into the curriculum for UNC’s new School of Data Science and Society, has
caused demand for the Data in Politics courses to skyrocket. We filled ten
45-person sections this year before running out of instructors. The courses
are also becoming a core part of our undergraduate experience. We are
realizing that giving students early exposure to data analysis really
broadens the range of things they can undertake in the second half of their
college careers. The TAP position represent UNC’s intention to continue and
increase investment in these successful changes.

We think this position would be extremely attractive to an ABD or recent
Ph.D. graduate who has discovered a passion for teaching modern political
science analytical techniques. UNC students are eager and fantastic.
Additionally, UNC treats its teaching faculty well: we expect the position
to be indefinitely renewable. It comes with benefits and opportunities for
advancement within UNC’s rank structure for teaching faculty. Moreover,
teaching-stream faculty are very much included in the Political Science
department’s governance and social life. As the position notes, the
starting salary is up to $80,000.

I’m pasting the position description below. It is also visible on APSA ejobs
<https://apsanet.org/CAREERS/eJobs/eJobs-Online/JBctl/ViewJob/JobID/13221>.
The application website is here
<https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/275379>, though note that the
description below (which is the same as on APSA) is a better description of
what the search committee is looking for than the brief description in the
application portal.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, Tim Ryan, or Santiago Olivella
with any questions. The person who accepts this position will be filling a
role in the Political Science Department that everyone really values, so
we’re hoping to find someone outstanding.
