Dear Jennifer Merolla,

As a past reviewer for the Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field
Research, we would like to ask that you encourage your students and their
colleagues to submit applications for the upcoming *November 15* deadline. We
hope you will help us to spread the word among your colleagues and students.

*Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research *

Application deadline: *November 15, 2023*

Letters of support deadline: *November 10, 2023*

*Information and access to application portal:*

The Lewis and Clark Fund encourages exploratory field studies for the
collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus
that accompanies direct observation. Applications are invited from
disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as archaeology,
anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology, linguistics, and
paleontology, but grants will not be restricted to these fields.

Grants will be available to doctoral students who wish to participate in
field studies for their dissertations or for other purposes. Master’s
candidates, undergraduates, and postdoctoral fellows are not eligible.
Applicants
who have previously received a Lewis and Clark Fund grant may reapply after
an interval of two years. Preference is given to applicants who have not
yet been granted an award from the Fund.

Proposals that are archival in nature or museum based will not normally be
considered. The competition is open to U.S. citizens and residents wishing
to carry out research anywhere in the world. Foreign applicants must either
be based at a U.S. institution or plan to carry out their work in the
United States.

Grants will depend on travel costs but will ordinarily be in the range of
several hundred dollars to about $5,000. Recipients will be designated as
Lewis and Clark Field Scholars.

Additional information, including access to the application portal and
FAQs, is available at the American Philosophical Society’s Lewis and Clark
Fund for Exploration and Field Research webpage:

well as by contacting Linda Musumeci, Director of Grants and Fellowships,

you in advance for spreading the word!

Sincerely,

Linda Musumeci
