Hi All,
Welcome back for the Fall Quarter! For those of you that are teaching this
quarter, I was wondering if you could share this opportunity below for any
undergraduate students that you think might be interested.
As some of you know I signed on with UCR's new Labor Summer
<http://ielcc.ucr.edu> this past March. This quarter we are hiring a
student assistant that will work for us until at least the end of winter
quarter. Officially the title will be a communications assistant with a pay
rate of $20/hour and a 10hr/week commitment.
Please see the official job ad below followed by a google form
<https://forms.gle/sY4F9JvCJUEt5reZ6> to apply (they could also apply
through UCRs handshake.)
POSITION OVERVIEW
Dates: As soon as possible- Mar. 15, 2024
Position title: Undergraduate Communications Assistant (Student Assistant 1)
Hours/week: 10
Hourly rate: $20
The UCR Inland Empire Labor and Community Center (https://ielcc.ucr.edu/)
is hiring an undergraduate student assistant for 10 hours a week to support
our communications efforts. The Communications Assistant will be
responsible for supporting the Project Coordinator to manage social media
for the center, developing a Listserv, and promoting the center through
attending and participating in community events.
This is a great opportunity for students passionate about social justice
and workers’ rights to gain on-the-job experience while supporting the
center to develop a social media presence, a system for communicating with
stakeholders, and a presence at events in the community.
The UCR Inland Empire Labor and Community Center
<https://ielcc.ucr.edu/> brings
together workers, students, faculty, labor and community organizations, and
policymakers to address critical issues facing working people and their
communities in the Inland Empire and California. Through our research and
our engagement with local communities and UCR students, we seek to promote
good jobs and to improve employment opportunities for all workers in the
region and state and to do so in ways that are beneficial to our
communities and are environmentally sustainable. Through our activities, we
also strive to educate and empower the next generation of community and
labor leaders, to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within our
regional and state economy, and to expand and improve the rights of workers
and immigrants.
This position will begin as soon as possible (once the student is
on-boarded by Harvest Shared Service Center), and likely be extended past
Winter Quarter based on the center’s budget.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Competency with core social media platforms and passion for creating
digital content
- Competency in Canva, Photoshop, or other design programs
- Familiarity with social justice organizing and the labor movement
- Ability to summarize complex labor movement-specific information to
make it accessible for students and community members (i.e. labor law,
negotiations processes, etc.)
- Knowledge of communications messaging and framing approaches
- Ability to attend in-person events promoting the center
- Ability to support the Project Coordinator in organizing events and
meetings
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous involvement with campus student groups or campus organizing
and relationships and ability to turn out peers to events
- Photography and videography skills to produce original content for
social media
- Ability to use design programs to design logos, t-shirts, and other
materials for the center
- High-level writing skills and ability to write newsletters, support
reports, or other content for the center
This position is available for both work-study and non-work-study students.
