Dear Prof. Merolla and Prof. Brookes,
I am Sammitha, PhD student from the department of dance studies. I am
writing to invite you to the screening of the following documentary which
I'm co organizing with my friend Soraya (from English department) on 26th
April.

We would also appreciate it if you could circulate the following e-mail
with the flyer among your colleagues and students in the department.

Thank you,
Sammitha

Please join us for a screening and discussion of the first episode of the
BBC documentary, *India: The Modi Question* on Wednesday, April 26 from 3-5
pm in INTS 1128. The documentary takes a critical look at the tensions
between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s Muslim minority,
investigating claims about his role in the 2002 “riots” that left over a
thousand dead. Since the release of the documentary, the Indian central
government has used its emergency powers to deny people online access to
the documentary and disable its public screenings, particularly in Indian
universities. This screening is an invitation to witness what the Indian
central government does not want us to witness, and to reflect collectively
about censorship under authoritarian regimes. Our gratitude to Dr. David
Lloyd, who will moderate open discussion after the screening. You are
encouraged to wear a mask, and note that food and drink (other than bottled
water) are not allowed in INTS 1128. Feel free to share the flyer with your
networks in and outside UCR, and let me know if you have any questions.

The Modi Question* on April 26 from 3-5 pm in INTS 1128 at the University
of California Riverside, followed by discussion moderated by Dr. David
Lloyd. The flyer features political context about the Indian government
banning public screenings of the documentary in India and a photo of a
frame from the documentary--its title beside an image of Indian Prime
Minister Narendra Modi raising his finger while speaking--projected onto a
screen in a street in India, where a crowd of men gather to watch it. Guests
are asked to wear a mask, to note that there is no food and drink (other
than bottled water) allowed in INTS 1128, and to contact Sammitha
Sreevathsa (ssree009 at ucr.edu) or Soraya Zarook (gzaro001 at ucr.edu) for more
information and accommodations.]
