Dear POSC Grads,
Welcome to the new academic year— I hope your fall quarter is off to a good start!
I want to extend a special welcome to our new incoming cohort, many of whom I met last week at Orientation—welcome again to our Department, and we all hope that your graduate program is off to a smooth start. I’m sure our returning students have also been welcoming to you all, and I hope that you are all getting to know each other, especially now that things are slowly moving back toward pre-pandemic norms and modes of engagement.
I wanted to let you all know some information regarding my availability, as well as share important news. First off, as some of you may already have heard, Prof. Marissa Brookes will be taking over as DGS next quarter. Having served in this role for 6 years, it’s time for me to step down, and for the position to rotate into a fresh set of eyes/hands. I have no doubt that everyone will be in excellent hands, since Prof. Brookes has already been learning the ropes for quite some time now, and is already becoming rapidly familiar with all of the processes/conventions/regulations, and so on. I hope you will all give her a warm welcome in January, while also extending some grace and patience as she continues to go up the learning curve.
Second, I want to mention that I have not regularly held office hours for some time now, both due to the pandemic, and due to the fact that most students do not typically attend “drop-in” hours, and seem to prefer instead to schedule appointments to discuss private matters.
Therefore, I am still always available to schedule meetings via Zoom at any mutually convenient time. Please feel free to reach out to me any time you need to discuss anything, and I am typically available for a meeting within 24-28 hours on Zoom.
Additionally, I will occasionally hold in-person office hours on campus this quarter on Monday afternoons, although they will be occasional rather than weekly. In the month of October, I’ll be in office hours on Oct 10 and Oct 31 from 12:30-4 pm. Please freel free to drop by during those times if you like. I will have additional office hours during the rest of the quarter, which I will schedule later.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns or even just to say hi—I look forward to seeing many of you in person whenever possible.
All best,
Farah
