Dear Dr. MEROLLA,

I write to request your help in finding candidates for a tenure-track
position in International Relations with a specialization in Asian Politics
(preferably Chinese politics). The position closes September 23, 2022. We
recognize that many graduate departments are unfamiliar with our
department, Gonzaga University, and Spokane, WA. I would like to tell you a
little about us in case you know anyone who would be a good fit for our
current positions or other positions we may have open in the future.

Gonzaga is a university on the rise. We were recently ranked by U.S. News
and World Report as the #79 national university in the country, our highest
ranking ever. At the same time, we are a Jesuit, humanistic university
with a deep, historic focus on teaching and mentoring, which is why we were
previously ranked number one in teaching out of 140 regional universities
in the Western US and are now ranked #13 nationally in Undergraduate
Teaching. We realize some graduate students may have concerns about working
at a Catholic university, but I assure you that our administration,
faculty, students, and staff both welcome and represent diverse views,
faiths, and practices.

Our department is currently in the process of creating an exciting new
curriculum. We have a diverse set of students and are committed to
fostering an inclusive pedagogical environment. We have had some
retirements in the past couple of years and are excited about the diversity
and vibrant new perspectives on the discipline that our newest faculty will
contribute as we reshape our department. The Political Science department
embraces Gonzaga University’s Mission to foster in our students “a mature
commitment to dignity of the human person, social justice, diversity,
intercultural competence, global engagement, solidary with the poor and
vulnerable, and care for the planet.”

Gonzaga is located on the ancestral homelands of the Spokane Tribe of
Indians. The second largest city in Washington state, Spokane boasts a
vibrant art community and a range of exciting restaurants and beverage
amenities. One of my favorite things about Spokane is its location close to
several ski resorts and other areas where one can enjoy outdoor activities
such as fishing, hiking, and camping.

In short, we seek a colleague with strong teaching skills and a commitment
to inclusive pedagogy. We would appreciate any assistance you can provide
in alerting potential candidates of our search and program.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. Thank
you in advance for your time.

Sincerely,

Stacy Taninchev, Assoc. Professor and Chair
