Dear Physics Community,
You are cordially invited to attend the following seminar:
Speaker: Wei Shi (Stony Brook University)
Title: "Illuminating the Neutrino Frontier: Light Detection in DUNE"
Date & Time: Tuesday, March 31 | 10:00–11:00 AM
Location: Physics Reading Room
Abstract:
As the next global flagship facility for high-energy physics in the U.S.,
the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) aims to unlock the
mysteries of the neutrino mass hierarchy, CP violation, and supernova. At
the heart of DUNE are tens-of-kiloton-scale Liquid Argon Time Projection
Chambers (LArTPCs), which provide 3D imaging of particle interactions.
While traditional TPC analysis relies heavily on ionization charge, the
detection of scintillation light offers a powerful, often underutilized
dimension of information. This seminar will explore how "illuminating"
these neutrino interactions—literally detecting the photons they
emit—significantly enhances energy resolution on top of timing precision.
Wei will outline the physics reach of DUNE, the specific role of photon
detection systems, and novel R&D aimed at maximizing light collection in
future detectors.
We hope to see you there!
