Dear Physics Community,
You are cordially invited to attend the following seminar:
Speaker: Utkarsh Bhura (King's College London)
Title: "Forecasting Axion Signals in the Milky Way"
Date & Time: Thursday, August 6 | 11:00 AM
Location: Physics Reading Room
Abstract:
Axions are among the leading candidates for dark matter and may convert
into radio emission in neutron-star magnetospheres. We present sensitivity
forecasts for detecting this signal with a 5-m radio telescope at Fan
Mountain Observatory operating over 0.5–4 GHz (UHF, L, and S bands).
Assuming the standard halo model, a three-year observing campaign probes
previously unexplored parameter space for axion-like particles and improves
the sensitivity of neutron-star radio searches by more than an order of
magnitude. We describe the neutron-star population model, telescope noise
model, and observing strategy used to obtain these forecasts. Initial UHF
and L-band observations (0.5–2 GHz) serve as the pathfinder phase of the
Axion Search with Telescope for Radio Astronomy (ASTRA), laying the
groundwork for a broader experimental program.
We hope to see you there!
Best,
Dauda Gbujama
