Dear Physics Community,

You are cordially invited to attend the following seminar:

Speaker: Samuel Hedges (Virginia Tech)

Title: "Using Nuclei to Search for Neutrinos and Dark Matter"

Date & Time: Tuesday, April 7 | 10:00–11:00 AM

Location: Physics Reading Room

Abstract:

Some of the biggest open questions in particle physics involve the nature
of dark matter and the fundamental properties of neutrinos. Experiments
seeking to study these particles often require ton- or kiloton-scale
detectors. In this seminar, I will describe my work on small-scale
detectors, with masses ranging from a few grams to hundreds of kilograms,
designed to search for rare interactions of neutrinos and dark matter with
nuclei. First, I'll discuss efforts to measure neutrino-nucleus
interactions relevant for supernova neutrino detection using a stopped-pion
neutrino source. Then, I'll present a novel technology that uses ancient
minerals to search for rare interactions on geological time scales.

We hope to see you there!
