Hi all,
We will have our first PASS talk of the quarter on Monday by Johnson
Jiang. Please join us at noon (*from 1:00 pm* to 2:00 pm) in the Nebula
Room (PHYS 3027).
*Please note the unusual time of the talk.*

*Scattered synchrotron emission revealed in polarized light*
Centaurus A is the nearest radio galaxy and a prototypical
low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN), exhibiting complex
emission across the electromagnetic spectrum. The nature of its
continuum emission, particularly the mechanisms powering it, remains
debated due to heavy dust obscuration preventing direct observation of
the AGN. I present spectropolarimetric observations of Centaurus A with
VLT/FORS2 that covers the 6100−10300 Å spectral range, providing a
periscopic view of the central engine. A strict upper limit is placed on
the power of the accretion flow and we confirm for the first time that
scattered beamed synchrotron emission is observed in reflection.
Interestingly, spectropolarimetry also reveals Centaurus A as a hidden
narrow-line region (NLR) AGN with a giant torus. Additionally, I present
a spectropolarimetric study of 3C 270 (NGC 4261).
