Subject: The Brown Physics Promoting Representation and Equity in Physics (PREP) Program | Assistance with Ph.D. Application Process!

Dear Department Chair,

We would like to share the Brown Physics Promoting Representation and Equity in Physics (PREP) program<https://www.brown.edu/academics/physics/brown-prep>, an opportunity for underrepresented undergraduate students to obtain help to prepare strong physics graduate school applications. We have included a blurb below with further details and ask that you please share it with your undergraduate (and potentially masters) students.

Join us for the Brown University Physics Promoting Representation and Equity in Physics (PREP) program on Sunday, November 19th from 1pm to 4:30pm. This program is intended to help students from traditionally underrepresented groups prepare their applications for advanced study in physics. We will have sessions introducing the physics research programs at Brown, and sessions devoted to the process of applying, the graduate student experience, and the ins and outs of the PhD admissions program. You will also have the opportunity to sign up, at a later date, for continuing mentoring via drop-in sessions to help hone your application materials. Attendees who apply to Brown physics admissions can ask to waive the application fee. You can find further details on the website<https://www.brown.edu/academics/physics/brown-prep> and apply to the program here<http://survey/>.

This program is directly trying to address the lack of diversity in STEM and in particular physics PhD programs due to racial, ethnic or gender identity. As such, when we mention under-represented groups, there is a special focus on Black, Hispanic, and indigenous peoples communities, female and female-identifying students, and other gender minorities, but members of other marginalized communities are also included.

Best,

Farrah Simpson (she, her, hers)
Physics Ph.D. Candidate, Brown University
Brown Physics PREP Chair
Past Board Student Representative, National Society of Black Physicists
