New Beginnings for PPAC
Twenty-three faculty/staff/students met on December 9, 2024 at The Barn to discuss the newly developed Pre-Law Advisor partnership between the Division of Undergraduate Education and the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. During the lunch, attendees shared the need for this service and discussed ways to partner in support of developing a campus-wide pre-law advising structure.
According to the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC), over the past four years, there have been 182 (2024); 183 (2023); 174 (2022) and 192 (2021) applicants to law schools from UCR with an additional 1,200 first and second-year students (5%) of UCR's student body having an interest in pursuing a career in law.
This new position and partnership have been added to the Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) portfolio, which currently supports pre-health students. Beginning this winter quarter HPAC has started to rebrand as the Pre-Professional Advising Center (PPAC), the first in the UC System. A special thanks to Charlie Scruggs for leading this effort between the DUE and CHASS and many other campus partners!

New Chair of the Journal's Faculty Advisory Board
The UCR Undergraduate Research Journal is excited to announce that Dr. William Grover has accepted the position of Chair of the Journal’s Faculty Advisory Board. Dr. Grover is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering. His research focuses on the development of medical devices, sensors, and other bioinstruments. Dr. Grover has been at UCR since 2012 and is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teaching. Prior to joining UCR’s faculty, he completed his postdoctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Grover is a long-time member of the Journal’s Faculty Advisory Board and is excited to help guide it into a new chapter! A special thanks to Jennifer Kavetsky, Dr. Morris Maduro (past Journal Faculty Chair), and Gladis Herrera-Berkowitz for serving on the selection committee.

DUE Collaboration Results in ARC Syllabus Language Shared with all UCR Faculty
About two to three times a quarter, the VPDUE, in collaboration with our UIA Fellow Nelly Cruz, sends a communication to all UCR faculty focused on pedagogy, data, and resources. In January 2025, we shared a unique communication with all faculty focused on the various resources available to students in the ARC. Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Rena Roberts, and in collaboration with the Academy of Distinguished Teaching (ADT), faculty have access to updated language to include in their syllabi and Canvas course materials related to ARC’s resources and services available to students.

CRF's Conclude Another Successful Quarter
The Chancellor’s Research Fellows (CRF's) finished a successful fall quarter, hosting mentorship & leadership events for all undergraduates focused on connecting to faculty, time-management, succeeding at a research university, and post-graduation opportunities. We thank Dr. Begoña Echeverria from Honors and Dr. Richard Edwards from XCITE for serving as panelists and encouraging students to be the best they can be. In addition to hosting events for undergraduates, the Fellows met with PBK Visiting Scholar, Dr. Corey Robin, Distinguished Professor of Political Science, Brooklyn College and CUNY Graduate Center, and Chancellor Wilcox and Diane Del Buono.
For winter 2025, the Fellows will be hosting Mandatory CRF Application workshops weeks 2-8. Please encourage promising sophomore and junior researchers to attend. The workshops will provide valuable information on how to prepare a competitive application.

First-Year Faculty Teaching Excellence Seminar Update
In December 2024, the Academy of Distinguished Teaching (ADT) concluded its second offering of the First-Year Faculty Teaching Excellence Seminar Series with a panel about the role of teaching in the merit/promotion process. Over the 10 weeks of the quarter, faculty, postdocs, and staff attended a series of five workshops to learn about inclusive and excellent teaching.

LEARN. INTERN. NETWORK. EXPLORE.
The Center for Undergraduate Research & Engaged Learning (CUREL) sent 19 UCR students to UCDC this winter quarter. Many of them will experience a cold winter on the East Coast for the first time, as well as witness Inauguration Day on January 20! The campus has not sent this many students in the winter since 2014! A special thanks to Macy Ring for leading the way for UCR!
A majority of students learn about UCDC from a friend or peer, followed by social media, or their academic advisor. As usual, CHASS predominates with 12 students; however, Sociology is the top major this term. Political Science usually sends the majority of students, but it came in second this quarter, along with Business and Public Policy. There is a good diversity of students coming from most of the colleges this quarter, except BCOE.
Students this term are interning with the following organizations:
* American Society of Anesthesiologists
* Beautiful I Am
* Champions KinderCare
* Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking (DISB)
* Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition
* League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
* MALDEF
* National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA)
* Office of Congressman Dan Newhouse (WA-04)
* Office of Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46)
* Office of Congressman Mark Takano (CA-39)
* Office of Congressman Pete Aguilar (CA-33)
* Office of the Attorney General
* Political Violence Lab
* Pro Bono Institute
* UCDC Academic Internship Team
Do you have an exceptional student in mind for UCDC? Please encourage them to apply for either spring 2025 or fall 2025! The UCR campus deadline for spring is January 24, 2025 and fall is February 21, 2025. Note: summer 2025 is closed and not accepting new applications.

UCR's Army ROTC Conducts Intro Lab Class
The Army ROTC leadership labs are essential for developing cadets into confident and capable leaders. Using the Army's platoon structure, 20-30 cadets, and tactical scenarios, cadets practice decision-making, critical thinking, and planning in realistic environments. As they rotate through roles like team leader and Junior-level manager (platoon leader), they cultivate their leadership attributes—character, presence, and intellect—while mastering competencies such as building trust and achieving results. These hands-on experiences prepare cadets to lead effectively under pressure, embodying the values and skills required to excel as Army officers and future leaders committed to excellence and mission success.
