Dear UE Colleagues,

As we approach the end of the Spring quarter and academic year, I think it is safe to say the season for celebrations has officially begun this week. I want to acknowledge two signature UE events this week that reflects both programmatic excellence and impact and role that UE has on campus.

1. On Wednesday XCITE led the campus wide Celebration of Teaching event. The COT is a collaborative event between XCITE, the Academy of Distinguished Teaching, and the Academic Senate. There was representation from the Chancellor and Provost’s offices and it was a time to recognize faculty excellence in the classroom. XCITE orchestrated a well-run program which shines a light on XCITE’s staff and leadership in producing high quality programming for our campus. Congratulations to XCITE!
2. Secondly, I’d like to acknowledge the University Honors Cording ceremony. University Honors delivers this signature every year to recognize the University Honors students who are graduating this year, while also recognizing outstanding faculty mentors, and UH staff who deliver the programming throughout the year. Last night was particularly special because the University Honors staff surprised Rich Cardullo with a recognition to honor his leadership and service to University Honors over the last decade. Congratulations to the University Honors staff and leadership for a successful event last night!

These moments not only highlight our student and faculty excellence, but the UE staff and leadership who continuously show their dedication to our students and campus. And, this is when universities and higher education win. We win because we serve significant Pell grant and First Generation students. We win because we serve among the most diverse student populations in the entire system. We win because we able to see the pride in parents’ eyes as their children are recognized and walk across the stage. We win because our students’ siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, and other loved ones witness excellence and are proud and inspired. We win because our students get the opportunity to reflect on their dedication, hard work, and thank the people who helped them along the way. We win because our students often continue on to professional or graduate school or the workforce and often declare a commitment to serving their communities. In fact, we win because service to our students is a service to their communities and our communities. Finally, we win because we have built a legacy of people who continue to remind us why we do what we do every single day to meet our mission. Thank you, UE staff, for your continued service to our students.

I wish you a good weekend.

-Louie
