The Goldwater Scholarship recognizes outstanding sophomores and juniors who plan to pursue research careers in STEM. The NSF GRFP supports students pursuing graduate degrees in STEM. CUREL hosted weekly workshops from July 8-August 22 to prepare students interested in applying for these national competitive programs.

Student Awarded Prestigious $15,000 Scholarship
UCR Student, Rahul Almeida, was awarded the $15,000 Strauss Scholarship to fund an educational intervention program he organized titled, "Food for Thought." Rahul worked with CUREL's Prestigious Scholarship unit to earn campus endorsement for this award, which supports student-led public services programs.

The Prestigious Scholarship Unit is currently looking for students who identify needs in the community and have sustainable solutions. The deadline for the 2025-2026 awards is February 1, 2025. Students are encouraged to connect with Prestigious Scholarship unit as soon as possible.

2024-2025 CRF's Attend Orientation

HESA 2024
With the addition of Math 3, the Highlander Early Start Academy (HESA) was able to enroll 200 participants, which is a 110% increase from 2023.

UWP Writing Placement Changes
Substantial changes and improvements to the UWP Writing Placement process for incoming UCR freshmen took place from 2023 to 2024. Unlike 2023, which required in-person, paper examinations at UCR, 2024 saw 2,722 students tested online through Canvas from May through August.

UWP reduced test dates from 21 in-person (at UCR) test administrations in 2023 to 12 online test administrations using UCR Canvas in 2024. Ultimately, the UWP was able to reach more students in a timely manner through a secure, online administration of the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) (our writing diagnostic tool). The UWP was able to partner with XCITE to systematically evaluate and adopt security software (Respondus Monitor) that will not only be used in the online proctoring of our Placement Exam the AWPE, but such software can now be used to increase the efficacy of in-class on-demand writing for ALL UWP instructors.

In addition, the online administration of UWP Placement of the AWPE in 2024 increased the equity of the Writing Placement process for students by not requiring that they make costly trips to the UCR campus; it allowed for timely Placement decisions so that students could register at the time of their Orientation and/or participate in summer school if they chose to. These changes were not only a huge boon to students, but they also enabled the Writing Placement process to become more logistically sustainable.

Lastly, these improvements increased the viability of a local Placement system through the development of a cohesive organizational and leadership structure that combined with a centralization of documents and exam administration procedures via Canvas and shared Google folders. We switched, in essence, from over relying on one person (be it staff member or faculty member) to more of a team approach. All of this, of course, was in the service of students and the UCR mission.
