Please disseminate this message broadly within your unit to Principal
Investigators and those individuals involved in the development of NIH Grand
Challenge grant applications.

The deadline for submitting NIH Grand Challenge grant application is 5pm
local time on April 27. It is anticipated that UCR will be submitting
approximately 50 applications and it is estimated that the University of
California will be submitting more than 1,000 applications. The NIH
requires that these applications be submitted via Grants.gov, a system that
the federal Office of Management and Budget recently acknowledged as
continuously experiencing an application submission load that has far
exceeded the throughput originally anticipated, thus resulting in noticeably
degraded performance.

It is inevitable that the continued performance problems with Grants.gov
will be exacerbated by the intense interest in the NIH Grand Challenge grant
program. Therefore, to facilitate the submission of applications to this
program, it is strongly recommended that Principal Investigators plan on
submitting the final Adobe Forms file to the Office of Research no later
than the start of business on Friday, April 24. Application files received
after that time may run the risk of not being received by Grants.gov prior
to the submission deadline.

If you have questions regarding the Grants.gov proposal submission process,
please contact the Contract and Grant Officer
<http://or.ucr.edu/home/Staff.aspx?t=3> assigned to your unit.

Bruce Morgan

Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research
