Welcome to the 2022 academic year at UCR!

This year we are kicking off the academic year with lots of in-person events, some of which we have been included in this newsletter! Below are some tips on navigating the resources at UCR:

1. Each department, unit, program, and college will have its own events, activities, and communication with and for you. For instance, the units in Costo Hall offer a plethora of peer mentoring, free printing, access to a textbook library, testing supplies, etc.
2. As transfer students, your colleges have transfer student support programs such as: CHASS Transfers First, BCOE Transfer Transition Program, and CNAS STEM Connections. Be sure to connect with your academic advisor for your unique college program.
3. The Academic Resource Center (ARC) also offers a transfer support program, be sure to connect with the Transfer Success Program for more opportunities to enhance your academic experience and prepare you for graduate programs!
4. Student programing such as; concerts, special guests, orientation, fraternities and sororities, and tradition keepers are all offered through Student Life, be sure to connect with their team!

These are just a few examples of opportunities to connect with campus and enhance your student experience. You will now receive monthly updates with information relevant to your transfer student experience in addition to your own colleges.

Welcome Highlanders!

Phoenix Gutierrez transferred from Mt. San Jacinto College Fall 2021 as a Mechanical Engineering major. We asked Phoenix a few questions regarding his transition, here are his responses:

What UCR activities have you participated in?
Spring Splash, Club Rush, SRC Movies, and UCR's Formula SAE

What words of wisdom would you like to share with your transfer peers?
Start your work as early as possible and ask as many questions as you can. No one is going to judge you or think differently of you if you ask a lot of questions or get bothered by it. Go to office hours for both your professor and your TA's. They are there to help you and you will thank yourself later by going.

Eric Yang
Program Coordinator
Undocumented Student Programs

Eric Yang transferred from El Camino College to the University of California, Irvine where he received his Bachelor's of Arts in Economics. We asked Eric to share about his transfer student experience as well as some words of wisdom to our transfer community, here are his responses:

Would you like to share a little bit about your transfer student experience?
I transferred out of the community college at the age of 24. I worked during my entire duration while at the community college. I am a first-generation and undocumented student. There was a lack of access to information about higher education. The journey was difficult and long, but it was also memorable and wonderful.

Words of wisdom to UCR's transfer community:
Higher education is a huge accomplishment. Don't ever feel like you got here late. Everyone's track and journey is different and we should be celebrating that.
