<https://moderncomposition.la/003-Mekala-Session> steps into the Florence
Bayz Music Series with a performance that merges jazz traditions with
forward-looking rhythmic invention. A Los Angeles native, Session learned
to play drums with Billy Higgins, and is now the bandleader of the
legendary jazz ensemble, the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. He has become a
central figure in LA’s current jazz vanguard. His work bridges community
history with new explorations in rhythm, texture, and ensemble sound. His
solo practice opens up the drum kit as both a percussive and melodic
instrument, expanding its possibilities through improvisation and
