Hello and happy Spring Break!
A reminder that one of our undergraduate degree programs in the Department
of Music is the Bachelor of Arts in Music (Composition Track). This track
focuses on creating both acoustic and electronic music, and our program
partners with professional music ensembles that perform and record student
compositions. Students from the program have been accepted to some of the
top composition graduate schools in the country, and many are now full-time
professional composers.
In order to join the Composition Track, you *must *1) take MUS 037
(Introduction to Composition) by the end of your sophomore year (I am
teaching it this spring quarter!), and 2) pass a brief audition with
composition faculty (Dr. Paulo Chagas, Dr. Ian Dicke, and me) by the end of
your sophomore year.
During your junior and senior years in the Track, you are required to take
MUS 149 (Composition Forum and Studio), a course in which students take
weekly private composition lessons with faculty, four times before
graduation.
I promise the audition is not scary, and faculty help students prepare for
it during the MUS 037 class. Never written music before, but you've always
been curious about it? Sign up for MUS 037! Want to give composition a try
but not sure you want to pursue the Composition Track? Sign up for MUS 037!
All who have completed or tested out of MUS 010 are welcome!
Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hopefully
working with you soon!
Best,
Prof. Kauf.
