Dear Music Students,
Happy New Year! I hope this email finds you refreshed after the winter
break and looking forward to the new quarter. We have a number of exciting
developments this winter in the Department of Music, ranging from concerts
to new classes to professional development opportunities, and I hope you
will take full advantage of all that we have to offer.
Some highlights for the new year:
- After a four-year absence, our Javanese Gamelan ensemble is back! We
were fortunate to hire a master Indonesian musician, Pak Joko Sutrisno, as
our new gamelan director. Whatever your musical interests—whether you are a
performance major, a composer, a music and culture major, or something else
entirely—there is something to learn by participating in this extraordinary
ensemble. No prior experience is necessary – just sign up for MUS 168, and
come to the World Music Studio (ATHD 158) on Wednesdays from 3-6 pm!
Instructor consent will be granted to all interested students. [see
attached flyer]
- After many decades of teaching our classical piano students and
handling the piano proficiency exams, Prof. Kim Amin retired at the end of
fall quarter. We wish her a fond farewell, and are also excited to welcome
Dr. Todd Moellenberg as our new instructor of classical piano. Anyone
interested in studying piano should contact him immediately, including
those who need to pass their piano proficiency exams. He can be reached at
todd.moellenberg at ucr.edu.
- Last year's successful visit to the NAMM Show (National Association of
Music Merchants) by many of our Music Industry students has inspired us to
offer the opportunity once again. If you are interested in attending NAMM
'24 in Anaheim on January 27th, please contact Prof. Dana Kaufman (
dana.kaufman at ucr.edu). Registration and bus transportation from
Riverside will be covered by the department.
- As always, we will have a full round of concerts and events this
winter, including the weekly Bayz Series on Wednesdays at noon in Arts 157
(beginning January 17th), as well as performances by many of you at
concerts by the orchestra, band, choirs, jazz band, taiko ensemble, and
more. To whet your musical appetite, start by attending the Blue Rose Trio
concert on Thursday evening, January 11th, in Arts 166, featuring the
music of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and others. Learn more

.
Wishing you all the best for a successful and musical quarter!
