* Biography:*  Sharon Billings is Dean’s Professor in the Department of
Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at KU and a senior scientist at the Kansas
Biological Survey. Billings’ research seeks to understand how environmental
changes influence ecosystem functioning. She works at diverse scales to
understand mechanisms governing mass fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems (
*e.g.*, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus), and how they are influenced by
environmental change. She focuses on global-scale perturbations (*e.g.*,
changing climate, land use change) to help project how Earth’s
biogeochemical cycles and their interactions will function in the future.
Soil characteristics, plant roots, and soil microbes play dominant roles in
her work.
