Paid Public Health Microbiologist Certification training opportunities are
available for BS-level graduates in county and city public health
laboratories throughout California. Some students may want to consider this
opportunity if not planning to enter a health professions program
immediately after graduation from UCR.

LabAspire is a program created to address the critical shortage of qualified
professionals to direct California's public health laboratories. These labs
serve the general public by screening newborns for various genetic and
congenital disorders; watching for disease-producing agents in food, humans,
and animals; and testing for new threats like West Nile virus, Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), avian influenza, and bioterrorism.

Public Health Laboratory scientists and LabAspire Program staff will provide
an overview of the exciting career opportunities available to students in
public health laboratories and highlight available training programs and
funding opportunities for students. An optional tour of a local public
health laboratory will also be available to interested students, faculty,
and staff.

LabAspire provides financial support to qualified students seeking doctoral
degrees from the schools of public health at UCLA and UC Berkeley.
LabAspire funds also support post-doctoral fellows at the UCLA Geffen
School of Medicine and the California Department of Public Health, Microbial
Diseases Laboratory in Richmond.

LabAspire is funded by the California Department of Public Health and The
California Wellness Foundation; partners include UC Davis, UCLA, UC Berkeley
and the California Association of Public Health Laboratory Directors.
