[LOGOS] Future of LOGOS?

Hi Everyone,

[Apologies in advance for the long email]

With the end of the academic year and the beginning of Summer, this feels
like a good time to reflect on the future of LOGOS -- and in particular the
LOGOS meetups.

IIRC our first meetup took place in January 2024. At least in my vision,
the goal was to establish a truly cross-disciplinary community within UCR
broadly interested in "modeling and improving online dialogue." The idea
was to facilitate this primarily through informal presentations and
discussions of papers, work-in-progress research, and related topics.
Needless to say, I'm biased, but I believe that objective was accomplished.
We've built a vibrant, healthy community that brings together a broad range
of expertise and interests.

Naturally, we didn't have a fully defined roadmap when we launched LOGOS --
we weren't entirely sure what we were even building. But I do believe we
now have a good support system, with shared personal and technical
knowledge to foster collaborations, pursue funding opportunities, and
connect as a collective with other entities within and beyond UCR.

So what next? Personally, I've started to see diminishing returns and
growing challenges in keeping the meetups relevant in their current format.
For one, nearly everyone has presented at least once and the group isn't
large enough to have a second or third round just yet.

As a result, I believe it's time to discontinue the LOGOS meetup series in
its current form, or at the very least, under my "czarship," and for
someone else to step in and propose or coordinate recurring activities in
any way, shape, or form they see value in.

Thoughts? Btw, please join our Slack <https://ucr-logos.slack.com/> if you
haven't yet -- it might also be easier to discuss over there rather than
via email. I also realize this email might generate several follow-ups etc.
so apologies for the spam -- if you're on Gmail, see here for how you can
mute <https://zapier.com/blog/gmail-mute/> future emails in this thread.

Thank you all and have a great summer ahead!
