[LOGOS] Terrible news about the Stanford Internet Observatory

I've been a collaborator with Renee DiResta, who was the Stanford Internet
Observatories former research manager and has written a lot about
misinformation and online policies. This recent piece she wrote in The
Atlantic gets into it:
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/06/cia-renee-censorship-conspiracy-twitter/678688/

Also, Kate Starbird, a prof. at UWash's I-School, has, for a while now,
discussed on X and Bluesky her and her UWash colleagues' experiences with
this Commission also chasing after them, bogging them down with FOIA
requests, and spinning their research work.

Looking at the lawsuit of (Surgeon General) Murthy v. Iowa that kicked mud
on SIO, while it is unclear how the federal government will fare on this
one, SIO is not named as a defendant (having only provided technical
insight to the government like university researchers do, but got cited a
lot in the government's work). Notably, there are some really fringe
partisan organizations that submitted Amicus briefs in support of the
plaintiff--for example, The Claremont Institute and America's Frontline
Doctors (a quack medical org. which was/is led by Simone Gold, a
misinfo-peddling doctor who was recently convicted for her January 6
activities at the Capital). When the The Manhattan Institute is among the
more credible orgs on a list, that's not a good sign. =)
