Hi All,

MRB is asking for labs’ joint efforts to help maintain the cleanliness of
the refrigerator in the shared kitchen area. This will be an ongoing,
shared responsibility, with graduate students and postdocs taking turns. I
don't yet know what the final rules will be, but it should not require more
than one trainee from our lab per quarter.

For this Friday at noon, we are looking for one volunteer from our lab to
join volunteers from other labs to clean up the refrigerator. Please let me
know if you are able to help.

*1. We let the grad students/postdocs organize everything:*

the first cleanup of the refrig on Friday

establishing rules and schedules for long term cleaning schedule of refrig
and freezer

establish rules for keeping things in the refrig/freezer (such as labeling
of items) and what happens when the rules are not followed

establish a schedule for the labs to contribute cleaning supplies such as
sponges, dish soap, comet and green scrub pads (the only thing that MRB
provides is the spray for the counters and the paper towels)

devise an enforcement protocol

decide how the rules and schedules will be disseminated — posted in the
kitchen? QR code?

etc.

*2. For this Friday we request a broad participation with at least one
person from each lab. *

Folks should be motived to attend so that they can make sure their lab does
not get charged with extra duties. :)

Going forward, once the schedules are made not every lab needs to have a
person present for the clean up.

The grad students/postdocs can decide on the optimal number of people
needed for the various tasks.

*3. Faculty will be responsible for making sure at least one person from
their lab attends but **do not need to be present on Friday. *

Without PIs present, the grad students/postdocs will be more inclined to
take charge. (This will be a good experience in collaboration and
management of others as well as democratic decision making)

I will, though, bring cleaning supplies and place them in the kitchen area
before hand and stop by at 2 pm to see how they are getting along.

Thanks,
Vivian
