Hi All,

To better arrange our projects and prepare for future research, here are
some plans starting from next quarter. Feel free to let me know if anything
is unclear.

*1. Meetings*

   - Please summarize a to-do list right after each 1-on-1 meeting. We will
refer to this to-do list at the beginning of our next meeting. Any items
not completed in one week should automatically be carried over to next
   week's list.
   - To better keep track of research progress, please summarize your
results using dated slides or written notes (depending on the nature of the
work). Avoid using temporary R sessions or presenting with code scripts.
   - Most of you have been doing the above routinely or occasionally, and I
hope everyone can make them a long-term habit.
   - If for some reason you need to reschedule individual meetings or
cannot attend group meetings, please try to let me know at least one day in
   advance (except for emergent situations).

*2. Emails*

   - There is an expectation that you reply to other group members'
(including me) emails within the same business day. If the email asks for
research related questions or results that you need time to gather
information, you can simply respond with the estimated time needed.
   - Please use the group mail list as a venue to share research resources
or seek help from other group members.
   - When you reply to the group emails, please use "reply to all" unless
you have a personal message only to be shared with a specific person.

*3. Journal club*

   - After Kiano's presentation on April 4, we will use our group meetings
to discuss a series of papers on "knockoffs", a type of statistical methods
designed to control false discovery rate. Unlike the discussion on
bioinformatics papers that focus on the main ideas of the methods, we want
to discuss the technical details of the theory underlying knockoffs in
depth, so we can understand the method and think about how it can be useful
in bioinformatics. A separate email will be sent out about the references.
   - For the above reason, we don't have to finish a full paper each time.
Each time, we will cover as much as we can, and the next presenter can
start from where we stop last time.
   - To study this topic, we will change group meetings in the Spring
   quarter to weekly meetings.
   - Even though our journal clubs in the Spring will focus more on the
above statistical methods, you should continue to read bioinformatics
publications to keep up with the literature. This includes publications
very relevant to your own research and those reflecting important
developments in the larger fields. If you read any publications that
describe a generally useful idea or demonstrates good academic writing,
please share them via the group mail list. To give you some motivation
for the reading, I would expect *at least 3* emails from each student in
   each quarter.

Best,
Vivian
