                *   Engineering Tobacco Mild Green Mosaic Virus for Crop
Protection*

*           Abstract: *
Despite being a plant pathogen to a limited number of hosts, tobacco mild
green mosaic virus (TMGMV) offers innovative solutions for crop protection
as an engineered nanocarrier. Our research demonstrates that TMGMV can be
thermally transformed into spherical nanoparticles (SNPs) capable of
efficiently encapsulating agrochemicals. These SNPs show good mobility
through soil while protecting cargo from adsorption, enabling delivery of
hydrophobic agrochemicals. Using a gel burrowing assay, we demonstrated the
efficacy of SNP-delivered ivermectin against nematodes after the
formulations passed through soil, whereas free ivermectin became
soil-adsorbed and ineffective. Building on this platform, we are now
exploring TMGMV's ability to deliver nucleic acids into plant cells for
immunoengineering applications. This emerging approach aims to transiently
activate plant defense pathways against pathogens without permanent genetic
modification, potentially providing prophylactic protection comparable to
immune priming.
