*          RNA Plasticity in Neuronal Health and Disease*

*Abstract: *
Over 50 neurological disorders have been linked to the instability and
expansion of tandem repeats, many of which are located within noncoding
regions of the genome. In this seminar, I will discuss our ongoing effort
in understanding the pathogenic mechanism of a hexanucleotide repeat
expansion within the first annotated intron of the C9ORF72 gene underlying
nearly half of the inherited cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). I will also discuss our new line of work
on identifying the roles of alternative mRNA translation in diversifying
the localization and functions of synaptic proteins.
