Hi Amy, Patty, and Jason,

I hope things are going well for you all at UCR! I’m writing to see if you, as dept/program leaders, could forward out a couple job opportunities we have in the Genomics Core here at Cedars-Sinai hospital for an undergrad-level research associate and a masters/PhD-level bioinformatician. I’m attaching a copy of the postings, a brief description, and links below.

Feel free to forward this as widely as you’d like, and if you or the students have any questions, feel free to email me (Alex.Rajewski at cshs.org<mailto:Alex.Rajewski at cshs.org>).

Thanks,
Alex

The undergrad-level position is a Research Associate I. The bulk of the job would be qPCR and library prep, but since this is an entry-level job, we wouldn’t expect anyone to be excellent at those coming. Mostly we are looking for recent bachelor grads that have some lab experience using a pipet, using a nanodrop/qubit, and doing DNA/RNA extractions. Everything else we can teach. If they know how to make serial sections that would actually be a big benefit too. Here is the link<https://jobs.cedars-sinai.edu/job/los-angeles/research-associate-i-applied-genomics/252/6795284560>.

The Research Bioinformatician I position requires at least a masters degree (technically PhD preferred) and would have to pass a brief coding test in R, python and shell. They would handle the data analysis of the single-cell and bulk RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics and occasionally some ChIP-, ATAC-, or whole genome sequencing. Some working knowledge of these techniques and common software tools is necessary. The posting says you have to know C++, Java, perl, and PHP, but that isn’t true. It’s just a boilerplate text we have to include in the posting. Here is the link<https://jobs.cedars-sinai.edu/job/los-angeles/research-bioinformatician-i-agct/252/6795275648>.

As a plug for Cedars as an employer, it’s pretty great. Being a hospital core lab the healthcare and insurance are excellent, work hours are very standard 9-5 M-F, and the COVID precautions make me feel very safe. Working in the core itself has a lot of advantages for someone who wants to really build a variety of skills. They would learn how to run Illumina sequencers, get very practiced at high-throughput genomics techniques/analysis, and since we’re one of the few certified labs from 10X Genomics, we often get to demo and learn new genomic technologies before they are publicly released. We do an enormous amount of single-cell RNA-seq and are doing more and more spatial transcriptomics (Visium<https://www.10xgenomics.com/products/spatial-gene-expression>) recently. You can make career out of the core and several folks have, but most candidates use this position as a springboard for a job in industry or to improve an application to grad school. We do a pretty even mix of service-for-hire and collaborative research with medical labs. If necessary, we can offer visa sponsorship too.
