Dear colleagues,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing as Chair of the Ibero-American Music Study Group because
several important developments have taken place within the American
Musicological Society over the past days, and I want to ensure that all
members of our group —including those who did not attend the annual meeting
in Minneapolis or who are not active on social media— have access to the
same information.

During and after the Minneapolis meeting, various concerns and
irregularities affecting the governance and functioning of the Society came
to light. Thanks to the generous and careful work of several colleagues, a
great deal of documentation has been gathered and made publicly available.
This information continues to grow day by day. For those who may not have
seen it, here is a central resource that summarizes the situation and
compiles relevant statements, resignations, memos, and reports:

A petition has also been circulating in response to these events. If you
wish to read it, it is available here—instructions for adding your
signature, should you wish to do so, appear at the top of the document:

To briefly summarize: several committees —including the Program Committee
and the Ethics Committee— submitted memoranda to the AMS Council during the
conference. Shortly thereafter, broader structural issues surfaced, leading
to the resignation of members from the Accessibility Task Force, the AMS 50
Award Subcommittee, the Development Committee, the Eileen Southern
Committee, the Paul Pisk Prize Committee, and from the Board itself.
Concerns raised in these documents include overreach by the Executive, lack
of transparency from the Board and Executive leadership, and instances of
unprofessional communication. The archive linked above contains the
relevant materials for those who wish to review them in detail. It is also
worth noting that members of our own Study Group have served on various AMS
committees over the years, contributing to —and benefiting from— the
Society’s academic and institutional growth. I believe it is important to
acknowledge this shared history as we try to understand the present moment.
President Julie Cumming has also written to the membership acknowledging
these concerns and indicating that the Board and officers are working on a
careful response.

As a Study Group, our mission is to continue fostering a collegial and
supportive community for scholars working on Ibero-American music within
the AMS. My intention in writing is simply to ensure that everyone has
access to the available information, so that each of you can form your own
understanding of the situation. Whatever may be happening at the broader
Society level, I remain committed to maintaining our Study Group as a
constructive, collaborative, and welcoming space.

If you have questions or would like to discuss any of this further, please
feel free to reach out.

Abrazos - Abraços - Warm regards,
