Dear UCLA Writing Project Fellows,

We hope you are all safe—and doing well.

Some exciting news. We’re starting a new UCLAWP LGBTQ+ writing group—one that will meet this 2025 winter-spring semester. WP fellow Joey Reyes has agreed to facilitate “LGBTQ+ Study and Writing.” Knowing the advantages of having co-facilitators, we are getting the word out for someone to co-lead with Joey. (This pleases Joey very much!)

Some of you either participated in or expressed interest in the LGBTQ+ Study Group we piloted in spring 2024. We had a promising start, focusing on selected readings and devoting a good amount of time puzzling out responses to questions and posing new ones. We will draw on this beginning and push forward—to elevate our commitment to being of use to the LGBTQ+ community and to allies.

With the devastating firestorms and changes in national life right now, we’re all sorting out our emotions and perhaps living one day at a time. The new writing group that we’re forming won’t attempt to whitewash our realities. Instead, it will create balance between sad and heavy feelings with a celebratory focus on strength, beauty, and gratitude for life.

Join this UCLA Writing Project community in a safe space to find support, build agency, and elevate your voice through writing.

What we’ll do:

● Read thoughtful pieces in a variety of genres to find connection, spur thinking, and sometimes spark novel approaches to our written craft.

● Use prompts to help generate ideas for new writing.

● Engage and learn from each other in a supportive, welcoming environment.

● Complete at least one short piece for potential publication.

Your own writing might take the form of teacher stories, personal experience, or op-ed pieces. Story, opinion pieces, fiction, poetry, writing accompanied by art—you’ll have a good deal of leeway. The UCLAWP will feature a series of pieces created in this workshop on our website. We encourage participants to pitch their writing to additional outlets.

Sessions: 6 virtual meetings, all 5:00pm-6:15pm. The first meeting will take place Tuesday February 18, 2025. Before the end of our session we will poll all attending to select five additional days spanning March, April, and May.

Stipend: $200. Thanks to funds we’ve set aside for a renewed focus on LGBTQ+ issues and realities, we’re able to offer stipends to the first twelve Writing Project educators who register. This modest gift is to honor your time, willingness, and collaborative spirit. Others may also participate—we just won’t have additional funds to support this gift.

Wishing you the power of words,

Faye Peitzman Joey Reyes

UCLA Writing Project Director Youthbuild Charter HS Teacher

About the facilitator: Joey Reyes (he/they) facilitated the 2024 LGBTQ+ study group. They teach English, Social Studies, and Art at YouthBuild Charter School of California in the city of Montclair. In 2023, he participated in the Writing Project and co-presented the workshop “That’s So Gay: Expanding the Queer Canon” at With Different Eyes. His guilty pleasures are having too many books, too many albums, and not enough time.
