Today’s students face a tumultuous world: racial inequities and violence, a global pandemic, and economic despair. We have seen students, politically aware and adept with social media, use writing to make a difference. Join Mary Ann Smith and Sandra Murphy, authors of Writing to Make an Impact, to explore ways teachers can create writing tasks and experiences that empower students to make things happen - by revealing injustice, offering new solutions, changing minds, calling for action, and promoting new thinking. This presentation will feature the work of two outstanding teachers whose civic engagement and Proteus projects are models for writing that make an impact – on readers, on causes, and on students themselves.
