Graduate Student Community,

Let me first take this opportunity to introduce myself, Gary Coyne, as the
new President of the Graduate Student Association. I have had the privilege
of meeting many of you but for those of you who do not know me, I am a third
year graduate student in sociology. I have held a number of positions in GSA
over the last two years, and will be serving as President for the remainder
of this academic year. However, the main purpose of this e-mail to pass on a
couple of pieces of information.

First, the GSA Council meeting originally scheduled for this Wednesday is
being moved back one week. It will now be held April 8th, at 6pm in room 355
of the Hub (same place, but the Commons has changed names).

Second, the information on our next Graduate Student Health Insurance
(GSHIP) contract will be up on our website by the end of the day. This
proposal will be voted on at the next council meeting and I encourage you to
pass on any feedback you may have to your departmental GSA representative,
any GSA officer or member of GSA’s GSHIP Committee. (The main reason for
moving the council meeting is that the GSA bylaws mandate that any proposed
GSHIP contract be made available for review for certain number of days.)

Third, elections for GSA officers are coming up very quickly. Applications
are due on April 7th and can be found at www.gsa.ucr.edu (as can information
about what officer positions are elected, what those jobs entail, amount of
stipends, and so on). I strongly encourage each of you to consider becoming
more involved in the Graduate Student Association; I have found my work to
be very rewarding. Please direct all questions to Tony Yang, Chair of the
Elections Committee, at yangt03 at student.ucr.edu.

Take care,

Gary Coyne
