My fellow UCR Grad Students,

I wanted to thank the department representatives for coming out to our first
council meeting of the year.   In this newswire you will find information
about the following:

1)   Appointed Officer Openings

2)   Softball Tournament Sign-Ups

3)   The GSA Graduate Community on Facebook



AAO Openings, *DEADLINE* 10/15/08

The Academic Affairs Officer for each college/school will assist the Vice
President of Academic Affairs in meeting regularly with departmental GSA's.
They will also meet, along with the VP of Academic Affairs, with the Dean of
the college or school they represent to foster communication between the
students and the administration. They also serve as non-voting
representatives to the Executive Board and when necessary (and if possible)
on the search committee for the Dean of the college/school. They will sit on
a joint academic advisory committee for the VP academic Affairs that will
meet once a month. Lastly they are required to sit on one GSA committee
subject to the approval of the Graduate Student Council.  The colleges and
schools that require representation are: The Bourns College of Engineering
and the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Please apply for one

ISAO Opening, *DEADLINE* 10/15/08



The International Student Affairs Officer will work closely with the
international graduate student communities assisting the President with
efforts to better serve this demographic.  If you are an International
Student and would like to be considered for this position, please email your

Secretary Opening, *DEADLINE* 10/15/08



The Secretary/Webmaster shall keep minutes during Council, Executive and
Emergency Meetings.  In addition, this position is charged with updating our

Softball Tournament, 11/1/08

Time to get your co-rec team ready for a GSA sponsored Softball Tournament
Saturday Nov 1st.  Team roster forms will be available at the beginning of
next week at the front desk in Commons 202.  In order for your team to be
admitted into the tournament, it needs to be comprised of predominately
graduate students.  Faculty, staff, undergrads, and family members can be
included in your team.  If you are interested in playing and don't have a
team but want to play, you can add your name to the "free-agent" list that
will be available next week.   This innagural tournament kicks off the
series of tournaments we will host throughout the year featuring other

If you are interested in joining our growing Facebook group, look for us
under "Graduate Student Association" and feel free to add yourself.  This is
the unofficial site for our graduate community.  This is also a forum to
exchange ideas, discuss important on-campus issues, talk about your work,
give "shout outs", promote your mixers, etc…use it the space is yours!
