[Gradstudents] Professional Development Workshop: : "Am I Doing Enough? Maximize Your Efforts as an Educator!"

Dear SOE Graduate Students,

Visiting Assistant Professor, Dr. Cynthia Villarreal will be hosting a professional development workshop on Zoom titled: "Am I Doing Enough? Maximize Your Efforts as an Educator!" on Wednesday, January 26th from 5:30-6:45 pm (75 minutes - 60 for panel and 15 for Q&A). Participants of the workshop will:


·         Reflect on their role as scholars/practitioners in higher education;

·         Walk away with strategies to assist them in addressing and reflecting on issues in higher education and their work;

·         Understand the role of community building and collaborating as a scholar and educator focused on equity, inclusion, and diversity.

To work through these items, there will be a panel which consists of the following guests:

Dr. Marissiko Wheaton <https://www.scrippscollege.edu/news/campus-news/spotlight-on-staff-assistant-dean-and-score-director-dr-marissiko-wheaton>
Dr. Marissiko Wheaton is the Assistant Dean and Director of Scripps Community of Resources and Empowerment (SCORE) at Scripps College - a women's college in Claremont, California. Prior to this role she worked at the Center for Urban Education (CUE) and Race & Equity Center at the University of Southern California as a Postdoctoral Scholar. In response to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, she organized a six-part webinar series which focused on racial equity in virtual classrooms and student support services. Marissiko is also an active community organizer, an Adjunct Professor and independent racial justice education consultant. (Source<https://www.linkedin.com/in/marissiko>)

Dr. Arely Acuña<https://www.calstatela.edu/diversity/dei-office-and-team>
Dr. Arely Acuña is the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Research Analyst at Cal State Los Angeles. According to LinkedIn, Dr. Acuña is an, "equity-minded educator, scholar, and practitioner with 6+ years of experience on diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy in higher education. Collaborative leader with a passion for social justice efforts and student empowerment. Overall mission is to equip, advocate, engage, and inspire students, faculty and staff to enhance their personal and professional growth, and create and inclusive and equitable campus environment for everyone in the campus community to thrive." Dr. Adrián Trinidad<https://race.usc.edu/about-us/#staff-directory>
Dr. Adrián Trinidad is the Assistant Director for Community College Partnerships for the Race and Equity Center (REC) at USC. As an undergraduate, Dr. Trinidad studied Sociology and minored in Forensics and Criminality. His research interests are in transfer pathways for racially minoritized community college students, policy implementation, and organizational change in higher education. Prior to USC, he transferred to USC from Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Having attended a community college, Dr. Trinidad is interested in understanding how practitioners can help students break the policy and structural barriers for transfer to a 4-year university. Steve Desir<https://pullias.usc.edu/people/steve-desir/>

Steve Desir is a doctoral student in the educational leadership program at the USC Rossier School of Education. Desir is advised by Julie Posselt<http://pullias.usc.edu/julie>. His research interests include racial equity in college admissions, organizational change and the use of theory-based psychological interventions to facilitate behavioral change. More specifically, Desir is interested whether insights from social psychology and behavioral economics can be used to improve educational experiences for minoritized groups. Desir earned a master's degree in education policy and management from Harvard University. Prior to his studies at Harvard, Desir completed a master's degree in secondary education from New York University, and earned his bachelor's degree in economics and political science at Penn State.
