Hello UCR Graduate Students,

The UCR TRIO Scholars Program is currently looking for graduate students that are interested in becoming mentors for undergraduates that have an interest in graduate school.

TRIO Scholars:
UCR TRIO<https://trioscholars.ucr.edu/> Scholars, also known as Student Support Services (SSS), is dedicated to opening the door of opportunity. The program is federally funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education<https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/index.html>. TRIO Scholars focuses on improving retention and graduation rates of first-generation, income-qualified students and students with disabilities. TRIO Scholar participants gain academic, social, personal and career support from entry into the program until graduation. The program strives to provide the contacts and networking opportunities necessary for success beyond graduation as well.

Description of Position:
The primary role of the mentor program is to pair established UCR graduate students with current UCR undergraduates who are interested in pursuing graduate school. The goal is to build
professional development skills, assist students in applying to graduate school, understand what to expect from a graduate program, and foster a community of future leaders at UCR. Graduate Mentors will develop a one-on-mentoring relationship with a TRIO Scholar and share knowledge and experiences. Graduate mentors should make an effort to anticipate the needs of their mentees, but also remain open to engaging in conversations about topics the mentees feel are important to them at the time. Ideally, mentors serve as both personal and professional support for their mentees.
We expect this experience to be as valuable for the graduate mentors as it is for the mentees. As a mentor, this is an opportunity to give back to the UCR Community, to support the next generation of educators, in addition to gain leadership, coaching, and mentorship experience that will deepen the graduate school experience while also furthering your career path.

The TRIO Scholars Graduate Mentor position is an unpaid volunteer position.
