From Prairie to Crop: Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Surface Soil Organic Carbon Stocks Over 160 Years in Illinois.

In this study, I explored the 160 years soil organic carbon (SOC) change across Illinois using geospatial modeling and machine learning. I applied a space-for-time
substitution approach, combining legacy soil data, historical land use/land cover records, and environmental covariates to estimate how SOC stocks have shifted from 1845 to 2012. Using random forest models, I mapped SOC at high resolution for both A horizons
and the 0–30 cm depth layer. The analysis revealed that converting native prairie and forest to cropland led to dramatic SOC losses—up to 50% in some regions, particularly in Mollisols of central Illinois. This work not only visualizes the long-term carbon
consequences of land use change but also pinpoints SOC loss hotspots that could be prioritized for carbon sequestration. By integrating GIS, historical datasets, and predictive modeling, I aimed to demonstrate how spatial tools can help us reconstruct environmental
baselines and support climate-resilient land management.

Dr. Nan Li is a project scientist at UC Riverside. Her research focuses on environmental soil physics, digital agriculture, and the application of geospatial
technologies and machine learning to study soil–plant–water interactions in agroecosystems. She integrates remote sensing, proximal sensing, and big data analytics to model soil moisture and nutrient dynamics across spatial and temporal scales. Nan has worked
on diverse projects across Australia, Illinois, and California, and is passionate about developing geospatial tools for sustainable land and water management.
