<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">At this meetup, Dr. Hector Zumbado-Ulate will give a presentation on
<b>Using species distribution models and GIS methods to assess the risk of invasion by a vineyard moth pest guild in the West Coast of the USA.<o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:12.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.5in"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">The recent invasion of the European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana) in California suggests that viticultural areas in the western United States may face severe economic consequences
from this and other Tortricid and Pyralid moth species if they were to establish. To gain insights into the risk these grapevine pests pose, we used occurrence records for L. botrana and four other moths native to Europe or the eastern United States and select
environmental variables to predict the extent of suitable habitat and potential pest co-occurrence along the West Coast of the United States. The results of this assessment may help with the optimization of surveillance efforts by indicating which species
or areas should be prioritized for the deployment of invasive pest detection programs with pheromone traps.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.5in"><b><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Bio:</span></b><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif"> Dr. Hector Zumbado-Ulate is a postdoctoral researcher at UC Riverside's Department of Entomology and at
the Center of Conservation Biology. Hector obtained his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Purdue University, under the mentorship of Dr. Catherine L. Searle. Hector's research combines spatial analyses, geographic information systems, and niche
modeling to examine the distribution of native and invasive species at different spatiotemporal scales.<b><o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
