[Geospatial] UC GIS Week and local GIS Day calls for participation

Hello everyone,

Happy September!

As Fall approaches, planning starts to gear up for UC GIS Week and local
GIS Day programming in November.

I'd like to share the following calls for participation that have surfaced
recently.

*UC GIS Week*
The UC GIS Week Planning Committee has sent out two calls, for volunteers
and for submissions.
*Volunteers:*

This is an open call for UC GIS Week committee volunteers who wish to help
with the organization of UC GIS Week. This year UC GIS Week will be the
week of November 16, 2026. Please share this email with other colleagues
and graduate students who you think might be interested in volunteering to
help coordinate the event. We will get started as soon as possible, but
people are welcome to join at any time. If you are interested, please
complete the volunteer form by September 18.

As part of the volunteer sign up form, we are asking that you state your
interest in which sub-committee might be of interest. We will do our best
to have balanced committees. We estimate the time commitment is
approximately 1-2 hours/week. We generally meet Friday’s at 1 pm.

Committees:

General UC GIS Week Committee:  all involved with UC GIS Week are on this
committee to help with any aspects of UC GIS Week. All sub committee
members are a part of this General Committee. Estimated check-ins once a
week.

   -

   Marketing:  Subcommittee to promote and advertise UC GIS Week.
   -

   Programming:  Subcommittee to create an engaging and educational GIS
   Week program by soliciting, collecting, organizing and disseminating
   content proposals, presentations, activities and workshops.
   -

   Logistics:  Subcommittee to plan, manage and execute all logistical
   components to UC GIS Week including the event website/platform, virtual
   gallery, schedule host checks/practice sessions for speakers, and
   post-event surveys.

We will look to hold our first meeting the first week of September.

*Submissions:*

We invite you to participate in the UC-wide GIS Week November 17th - 19th,
2026. We will celebrate all things mapping and geospatial.

If you are a researcher, student, alumnus, or community mapper, there is
space for you to share your accomplishments and inspire others through your
mapping and spatial analysis.

We invite submissions that aren't a finished product; they can be a work in
progress or even a conceptual idea you are looking to get feedback on.

This year's UC GIS programming will be held virtually with some campuses
hosting in-person events. If you are a campus group looking to host an
in-person event, please reach out to ucgisweek at gmail.com

This year we are looking for submission for the following:

- virtual lightning talks (8 minutes);

- virtual presentations (15 minutes);

 - virtual workshop (20-30 minutes);

- maps, story maps, posters, interactive pieces and pre-recorded lightning
talks (5 minutes) for display in the virtual gallery.

We are accepting submissions until October 16th, 2026. You will be notified
on October 23th, 2026 if your request to participate is accepted.

*City of Riverside GIS Day*

*(paraphrased from an email sent by a City of Riverside GIS Analyst)*

The City of Riverside is planning a GIS DAY event on Tuesday, November 17th,
2026.
UCR is invited to participate.
The UCR Culver Center is the tentative venue, in Downtown Riverside. This
is a planned public event from 10 am – 3:30 pm.

Food Vendors will be available as well.   (This event does not conflict
with other GIS day events on the 18th)

Students will have the opportunity to showcase their work, network with
professionals, and engage in discussions on critical topics such as
climatology,
environmental sciences and (Food)  sustainability among many other topics.

We would be thrilled to have UCR affiliates involved.

(Also, my understanding is that *Riverside County* is planning a GIS Day
event for Thursday, November 5.)

Please let me know if you or your students are interested in participating
in the City of Riverside's GIS Day, and I'll pass the info along to their
contact person.

And of course, please consider participating, and encourage participation,
in this year's UC GIS Week!
