Hello everyone,Welcome to Springquarter! Our next Geospatial/GIS meetup
will be held on Tuesday, April 7from 12:00-12:50 pm.This meetup willbe
hybrid. It will take place on Zoom, and in Orbach Science LibraryRoom 122
for those who wouldlike to attend in person. The meetup will be
recorded.Mike Cohen, consultant for the UCR Botanic Gardens, will give a
presentationtitled “High-Resolution Aerial Mapping of the UCR Botanic
Gardens byDrone” In this presentation, Mike willshare his journey of
acquiring a DJI Air 3 drone, obtaining his TRUST andFAA107A license, and
ensuring proper registration and labeling of the drone inaccordance with
FAA regulations. Mike will bring the drone to the meetup for ashow-and-tell
session. Mikewill also speak on using the drone in the ongoing UCR Botanic
Gardenshigh-resolution aerial imagery project. This project
involves capturingdetailed aerial visuals of the diverse plant collections,
landscapes, andfeatures, such as the Native American Garden. The goal is to
supportdocumentation, virtual tours, and conservation efforts, ultimately
creating anorthorectified imagery basemap.Mike Cohen is a GIS consultant,
dronepilot, and technology educator with more than 40 years of
experienceintegrating geospatial tools, imagery, and data-driven solutions
across publicservice and higher education. He holds a Bachelor of Science
in OrnamentalHorticulture from Cal Poly Pomona. Afterretiring from San
Bernardino County—where he led enterprise GIS initiatives andmanaged
large-scale aerial imagery programs—Mike became a GIS consultant
andvolunteer at UCR. His projects include developing interactive
ArcGISapplications, managing high-resolution imagery workflows, and
mentoringstudents in applied GIS. Mike incorporates drone-based mapping
andvisualization in educational and public-facing projects, with a focus
onhelping students understand how emerging geospatial technologies
translate intoreal-world careers. The meetup willstart with announcements
of general interest, including a description of the GIS-relatedevents
occurring at UCR on April 13 (StarMap workshop) and April 15 (Mappingthe
Future and the Chancellor’sDistinguished Lecture Series with Esri President
Jack Dangermond). Meanwhile, to register for the April 7 meetup
