Hello everyone,
This is a gentle reminder that our next Geospatial/GIS meetup will be held
*tomorrow*,*Tuesday **April 7*, from 12:00 - 12:50 pm. A few things have
changed since the initial announcement - read on to learn more!
This meetup will be *hybrid*. It will take place on Zoom, *and* in Orbach
Science Library Room 122 for those who would like to attend in person,
including the optional drone-flying demonstration afterwards. The meetup
will be recorded.
Mike Cohen, consultant for the UCR Botanic Gardens, will give a
presentation titled *“Drones: Technology, Applications, and Impact for
College Students.”*
In this presentation, Mike will address drone technology fundamentals as
well as applications, regulations and safety, and opportunities for
students. He will bring his drone to the meetup, AND will fly it at the
Bell Tower immediately after the meetup!
Mike will also provide a glimpse of using the drone in the ongoing UCR
Botanic Gardens high-resolution aerial imagery project. This project
involves capturing detailed aerial visuals of the diverse plant
collections, landscapes, and features, such as the Native American Garden.
The goal is to support documentation, virtual tours, and conservation
efforts, ultimately creating an orthorectified imagery basemap.
*Mike Cohen is a GIS consultant, drone pilot, and technology educator with
more than 40 years of experience integrating geospatial tools, imagery, and
data-driven solutions across public service and higher education. He holds
a Bachelor of Science in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal Poly Pomona.*
*After retiring from San Bernardino County—where he led enterprise GIS
initiatives and managed large-scale aerial imagery programs—Mike became a
GIS consultant and volunteer at UCR. His projects include developing
interactive ArcGIS applications, managing high-resolution imagery
workflows, and mentoring students in applied GIS. Mike incorporates
drone-based mapping and visualization in educational and public-facing
projects, with a focus on helping students understand how emerging
geospatial technologies translate into real-world careers. *
The meetup will start with announcements of general interest, including a
description of the in-person GIS-related events occurring at UCR on April
15 (Mapping The Future
