Alex Reed, a project manager for Mapping Black California, will be presenting on MBC’s Combating Racism as a Public Health Crisis<https://combatingracism.com/> platform.



Catalyzed by the violent, public murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police, public outcry for the acknowledgement of structural racism in law enforcement, healthcare and community conditions has resulted in nearly 35 separate Declarations of Racism as A Public Health Crisis by county commissioners, city boards, and government associations (entities) across the state of California. These declarations are an important first step to advancing racial equity and justice and must be followed by allocation of resources and strategic action. As is too often seen with issues that acknowledge the unfortunate and uncomfortable parts of American culture, yet so directly impact a near majority of residents, public protest is often met with swift allegiance expressed in words but seldom backed by deeds. In partnership with Stanford University and The Starling Lab, Mapping Black California has centralized the oversight of monitoring, analysis and reporting on the progression of commitments made by these elected and appointed associations from the perspective of the communities these declarations are meant to serve. For this session, we would provide context on the project’s ideation, introduce the map,  dashboard, and authentication technology, while walking people through the platform, explaining how this tool and the technology used to capture it is useful for journalists in their work.



Alex Reed is a project manager for Mapping Black California and provides support as a data researcher and visualizer for its many initiatives. In her broader practice she operates under the tagline A Jane of All Trades, working at the intersection of data and storytelling seeking to create moments where a user, reader, or student finds themselves engaged with and engrossed in information that they may have previously thought was beyond their reach. As a data activist, Alex has been able to address issues that range from disparities in health and education to social justice and civil rights battles for a variety of institutions, The Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Mellon University and WorldStage, Inc. to name a few.
