Hello everyone,

Our next Geospatial/GIS meetup will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12 from 12:00 – 12:50 pm PDT, on Zoom and in Rivera Library Room 140.

(To find Rivera 140: turn right after entering Rivera Library. Keep going until you pass the elevators. Room 140 is on the corner of the hallway you’ll see to your left.)

Our presenter will be UCR Psychology graduate student Kayla Chaplin, who will speak on Examining Relationships Among Regional Economic Conditions, Cognitive Control, and Racial Prejudice.

The goal of this research is to explore the impact of economic stress and inequality on cognitive control and intergroup bias, extending beyond individual analysis to regional levels. By aggregating US-based participants' responses on the Race Implicit Association Test, the study found that cognitive control was lower in states with higher poverty rates among Black populations. Additionally, intergroup biases were stronger in states with high poverty rates and income inequality. Together, this work highlights the need for policies to support economically vulnerable populations.

Kayla, a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Social/Personality Psychology area, focuses her research on understanding the mechanisms of prejudice and bias at both the individual level and the regional level. Her work at the individual level focuses on the cognitive processes that contribute to bias, and scaling this up, Kayla is trying to understand how psychological processes meaningfully vary at the regional level, and why. To answer these questions, she is interested in factors such as inequality, historical ties, policy, and selective migration.

The meetup will be recorded and will start with a few minutes of announcements.
