Hello everyone,



Our next Geospatial/GIS meetup will be on Tuesday, December 12 from 12:00-12:50 pm.



The meetup will be held in Rivera Library, Room 140 and on Zoom.

(To find Rivera 140: turn right after entering Rivera Library. Keep walking until you pass the elevators. Room 140 is on the corner of the hallway you'll see to your left.)



Joining us in person, Heiko Mühr from UC Berkeley Library will present on German World War II Maps: Geospatial Data from A Hidden Collection.



Following the end of World War II, the United States Army Map Service distributed maps it had acquired in Germany in 1944-1945 to U.S. research libraries. In subsequent decades these libraries did little to adequately describe and analyze these cartographic resources, despite their historical significance. The maps, published between 1860 and 1945, are therefore best understood as a hidden collection.



Both UC Riverside and UC Berkeley acquired large numbers of these German maps, and in 2017 pooled resources to digitize the maps in their possession. Detailed metadata has been created, including source map data and the corporate bodies that produced the maps. About 15,000 sheets are now available through UC Berkeley's digital collections.



The topographic map series that make up the bulk of this collection reveal the fragmentary nature of German cartographic history, with varying contributing mapping agencies, diverse source material, and a range of sophistication and technique. A smaller number of other types of maps - city plans, road maps, military planning maps, ethnographic maps, geological maps, and maps inventorying key resources in territories occupied by the Nazi regime - are also part of this collection.

Heiko Mühr is the Map Metadata and Curatorial Specialist at UC Berkeley's Earth Sciences and Map Library. He serves as map cataloger for the Berkeley campus and his role there also includes some public service and curatorial functions. Heiko has a long-standing interest in cartographic history and ethnographic mapping, which reflects his initial training as a social and cultural historian.



As a bonus for in-person attendees, we'll have a few of the actual maps on display in Rivera 140!

The meetup will start with announcements of general interest.
