First pioneered by composer Pauline Oliveros after an inspiring trip to a
cistern with a 40-second reverb near Seattle, Deep Listening is a
creativity and community-building practice motivated by the idea that
making and experiencing music is everyone’s birthright. Through an array of
activities including active listening walks, rhythmic machines, improvised
text scores, and movement exercises, Deep Listening provides an astonishing
variety of tools for communal music-making. We’ll practice strategies for
guiding improvised compositions as well as talk about designing
musical experiences for participants of all backgrounds.

No musical experience is required to participate. Please feel free to have
instruments on hand if you play one, and/or bring any sound-making sources
that you have in your space (this can include cell phones, random desk
objects, anything that makes an interesting sound).

This workshop will be facilitated by Grace Hong and Parker Nelson of the 5th
House Ensemble.
