All as a result of the past fires on campus, you may be inspected by the
State Fire Marshall office. They do not need your permission to enter your
office or lab to inspect. Based on what has happened recently, EHS has
sent the information below as it may relate to your space. The items below
will be on the Fire Marshall's list should they come knocking
(actually they will not knock!). In addition to your office and lab,
please inspect all common areas and correct anything that needs it.
- Ensuring that there should not be a lot of boxes and/or papers congesting
the space as these are good fuels for fires. This applies to the labs and
the spaces outside the labs. There were a few of those common spaces (by
the PI offices) that had many things piled and stored...these will need to
be cleared.
- There should be no daisy-chaining of electrical cords and power strips.
- There should not be any overloading of power outlets and power strips. If
you are not sure, find out. Circuits (not individual outlets) in the main
Entomology building are 20 amp. There can be more than one (white color)
outlet per circuit. Orange outlets are dedicated circuits (20 amp with
only 1 outlet on that circuit). Bright red (not orange) are back up power
circuits (hooked to the generator and also 20 amps). Swing by my office
and I can show you how to read the numbers on the outlets to determine what
outlet is on which cirucuit. There are workorders placed for Chapman and
the museum to get the outlets labeled.
- Equipment should be plugged directly into outlets.
- Flammables cabinets should be self-closing...if they do not self-close,
they are no longer qualified as flammables cabinets.
- Outside of a flammables cabinet, there should be no more than 10 gallons
of flammable chemicals in the space.
- There should be an 18 inch space free between the level of the sprinklers
and any shelves/equipment/stored items (basically 18 inches from the
ceiling should be clear).
- Make sure any structures built inside a lab are permitted by the Fire
Marshal.
*It is critical that you take care of this right away.*
